The Bell System designed this reel for picking up wire cable in neat coils. The reel is simply pushed onto the winch shaft, compressing the spring, and then turned to lock onto the shaft. After the wire is coiled onto the reel a quick acting handle is used to collapse the outer rim of the pick up reel allowing the coiled wire to be removed. These reels are used on the same shaft as a capstan head. The drum diameter is 20" with an overall diameter of 28". There are 6 inches between the flanges and the reel can handle up to 200 pounds of wire or cable. The maximum pulling force is 4,000 pounds. The reel weighs 73 pounds empty.
